Some things to consider
I moved from NOVA down to Charlotte about 10 years ago and here are the things that I have noticed over the years. And I agry with others that Columbia is definitely a smaller city similar to Roanoke so be sure that you are good with that.
Pros:
Weather is so much nicer. No harsh winters.
Quick drives to several great beaches, and larger cities for vacations.
Less crowded and slower pace of life.
Housing. What you can buy down here is insanely cheap compared to the bigger cities. For the size of my house, it would be worth 3-4x in NOVA and out of my price range.
General cost of living is lower.
Cons:
slower pace of life can get annoying if you like the bigger city vibe.
Far fewer variety of restaurants and good food choices.
Fewer entertainment options in general compared to a bigger city.
If you have kids, the public schools in both SC and NC are on the lower end of quality rankings for the country.
Bermuda grass...it sucks
Allergies down here can be brutal. Just be prepared.
Overall I'm very glad I moved down south as the pros far outweigh the cons for me. But it also helped that many of the friends we have made down here in Charlotte are also transplants from NOVA so we have things in common. But the true locals are nice as well. Just be sure to really scout out shopping, food, and neighborhoods so that you find the best fit for your lifestyle.
